An Invitation to Write the Next Chapter
Following a difficult year, The Besom in Esher is stepping into a season of hope and renewal.

As we look forward to rebuilding and revitalising the Besom in Esher, we are recruiting new trustees and people to join a core team implementing new ways to run our Besom. These roles are vital for guiding and sustaining our work, whether through administration, logistics, communication, safeguarding, pastoral care or practical support.
If you have a heart for serving, no prior Besom experience is necessary, only a willingness to take part with prayerfulness and love. Whether you can give a few hours a month or more regularly, there is a place for you and every contribution helps.
Roles We Need Fulfilled
The Besom in Esher is a small, relational charity, not a full-time, high-volume organisation. The roles outlined here are intended to describe areas of responsibility, not full-time posts or expectations of constant availability.
Our experience over the last 12 years shows that most roles can be shaped around people’s availability, shared between individuals, and adapted as seasons change. We want to be clear and realistic about the likely time commitment involved, so that people can prayerfully discern what they are able to offer without feeling overwhelmed.
We invite anyone reading this to pray and reflect on how God may be calling them to be involved, trusting that we can shape roles together in a way that is life-giving, sustainable, and faithful to the Besom vision.
-
Trustee roles typically involve:
Around four in-person meetings per year, plus time to read papers, prepare, pray, and reflect.
Occasional Zoom calls as needed.
Opportunities (but not expectations) to support operational tasks if desired.
Participation in occasional social gatherings, prayer meetings, and regional Besom Network events.
Operational (Core Team) roles are more hands-on but remain part-time and flexible:
A weekly meet-up to pray, plan, and work alongside volunteers.
Some key roles (such as logistics, scheduling, or lead coordination) typically require around 6–7 hours per week, while many others require significantly less. But this will vary depending on what activities are decided going forwards.
Roles will usually be based at the chapel, but many tasks able to be done from home. But building the Besom community of givers is key to part to the vision.
In the past we met on Mondays for Prayer/Admin and van runs on Thursday but the new pattern will be determined by availability of people involved.
Across all roles:
No one is expected to do everything.
Roles can be shared, combined, or adjusted.
Prayer, mutual support, and grace underpin how we work together.
Every contribution, whether large or small, genuinely matters.

Essential Trustee Roles (Critical for the Charity to Continue)
These roles are required for good governance, safeguarding, and legal operation. Without enough trustees in these areas, the charity cannot continue. We require a minimum of 3 trustees and Simon and Sherry will need to stand down due to their terms expiring but Annie will continue until the end of the year but will need to be replaced then so we need 3-4 new trustees. The broad roles within the trustees are:
Chair of Trustees
Provides leadership to the trustee team, helps set direction, supports good decision-making, and ensures the charity remains faithful to its vision and values.Treasurer
Oversees the charity’s finances, budgeting, and financial reporting, ensuring we operate responsibly and sustainably. Would be supported by the existing Bookkeeper.Safeguarding Lead
Ensures safeguarding policies and practices are in place and followed, supporting volunteers and protecting those we serve.Property / Facilities Oversight
Oversees storage, premises, and practical facilities needs, ensuring safe and effective use of space and assets.
-
Core Team Roles (Operational – Needed to Deliver the Work)
These roles support the day-to-day running of Besom and can be shared across several people. Many of these roles can be small, shared, or combined, depending on people’s availability and skills.
Coordinator / Leader – helps hold the overall operational picture
Church & Network Relationships – liaising with churches and partners
Pastoral Lead – volunteer care and safeguarding support
Logistics Lead – scheduling collections and deliveries, van coordination if Giving of Things is continued. Helping with Co-ordinating Projects, such as Gardening/Painting projects if undertaken.
Christmas Hamper Lead – overseeing the annual Christmas project
Referrals Liaison – managing referrals and communication with agencies
Administrator – general admin, records, coordination
Governance / Secretary – meeting minutes, compliance support
Stock Management – tracking and organising donated items
Project Assessor – assessing referrals and appropriate responses
Bookkeeper – supporting the Treasurer with financial records
Communications / Website Coordinator – updates, newsletters, website
Van Maintenance & Insurance Oversight – ensuring vehicles are safe and insured
Social Secretary – helping build community among volunteers
Prayer Coordinator / Lead Intercessor – coordinating prayer support
-
Not everyone needs to take on leadership or governance. We also need:
Practical helpers for collections and deliveries
Prayer supporters
Occasional helpers for specific projects
Advocates within churches and networks

The Besom Mission
Our mission continues to be enabling Christians from any church to give generously by connecting them with people in our community who are facing hardship. We help direct time, money, skills and possessions to where they make a real difference, offering practical support such as furniture, essential household items, DIY and gardening projects, hampers, all rooted in prayer and trust in God’s provision.
We have seen God at work in powerful ways over the last twelve years. There have been countless answered prayers and many lives lifted through the generous giving of local Christians. Through giving with the Besom, people have encountered God, deepened in faith and grown in community.
As we now have a physical base for the first time, in Hersham, we are expectant of what God has planned.
